A new study revealed that women are more likely to suffer from mental health problems, such as depression, suicide or substance abuse, if they choose to undergo an abortion, rather than carry a pregnancy to term.
“In this population-based study of more than 1.2 million pregnancies, having an induced abortion was associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for a mental disorder more than a decade later,” the study said. “Compared with live births and stillbirths, patients with induced abortion had a greater risk of admission for psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, and suicide attempts over time. Patients with abortions who were under age 25 years or had a preexisting mental health disorder were most at risk of mental health hospitalization.”

This study brings scientific evidence to a debate between pro-life and pro-choice advocates who have long disagreed about the impact an abortion has on a woman. Previous studies have produced similar results, providing a robust scientific basis to argue the negative mental health effects undergoing an abortion has.
“It is ridiculous to assert that abortion never contributes to mental health issues,” said a statement released by the pro-life Elliot Group. “We now know that the majority of abortion patients say that their abortions did negatively impact their mental health. To insist that abortion never impacts mental health is, essentially, an assertion that all these women are liars. That is an absurd, ideologically driven fantasy.”
Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the nation claims that while women may feel sadness or guilt after receiving an abortion, there is little chance to experience long-term mental health effects from the procedure.
“It’s totally normal to have a lot of different emotions after your abortion…” the organization’s website reads. “Most people are relieved and don’t regret their decision. Others may feel sadness, guilt, or regret after an abortion…It’s rare to have serious, long-term effects on your mental health after an abortion. But everybody’s different, and certain things can make coping with an abortion hard.”
As abortion continues to be a hot button issue in America, generally splitting Democrats and Republicans into different camps, it is important to allow scientific data to provide a basis for arguments. While those with a pro-choice view will often claim there are no negative side effects to undergoing an abortion, studies like this one prove that’s not the case.
Unfortunately, organizations like Planned Parenthood have put millions of dollars into Hollywood to normalize abortions through the media. Now that millions of Americans have believed this propaganda, they need to justify their beliefs, rather than understand they have been led astray and realize abortions are an evil act whose negative effects extend beyond the horrible reality of robbing a human life from having any chance.
