Actress Tika Sumpter Explains Why SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Is Perfect For Families on Valentine’s Day

By Tess Farrand, Associate Content Editor

Actress Tika Sumpter has a pretty simple recipe for her 2020 Valentine’s day- grab a pizza, family and see the upcoming move SONIC THE HEDGEHOG.

“It’s nice to also say, ‘You know what, fam, we’re going to spend Valentine’s together and we’re going to go see [SONIC THE HEDGEHOG], maybe we’ll get a pizza or something and talk about it and just have a good time,’” Sumpter told Movieguide®.

Paramount Picture’s SONIC THE HEDGOG is based on the widely popular character gamers know and love. Sumpter plays Maddie in the movie and tries to help Sonic get to the bottom of a sticky situation. James Marsden (ENCHANTED) and Jim Carrey (BRUCE ALMIGHTY) also star in the movie.

“Valentine’s Day can have a lot of pressures, like uneasy pressures,” said the GOSSIP GIRL alum. Instead of the traditional love-flick, Sumpter feels that SONIC is a fun change of pace.

“This is a film that you can go to with whomever you decide to go with, and not feel pressure of any sort,” she said.

Sumpter also feels comfortable sharing her latest project with her own family.

“This [movie] is something that my daughter can go watch, [and] she has watched. She’s only 3 and she literally sat still the entire time,” Sumpter asserted. “That’s how much action- and jam-packed adventure is in it for all ages.”

Sumpter’s daughter, Ella, is no stranger to visiting her mother on set. Sumpter loves being a parent and working in the industry and finds that setting good boundaries between her work and personal life empower her to be the best in both areas.

“What works for you works for you,” she said. “I’m thoroughly enjoying being a mom and  the ups and downs with all of it.”

Stay tuned for the review of SONIC closer to Feb. 14th.
