Anne Wilson Says God Gave Her ‘Confidence’ to Bring Faith into Country Music

Anne Wilson Says God Gave Her ‘Confidence’ to Bring Faith into Country Music

By Movieguide® Contributor

Anne Wilson says her latest album is a refusal to compromise — whether that’s her faith or her love of country music.

“In my own journey, I need to be authentically who I am, which is someone who loves Jesus, but I love country music,” she said during an episode of “The Matthew West Podcast.” “But I’m not compromising.”

Her second album, “Rebel,” mixes her strong faith and her passion for country music together.

“I wasn’t going to change my sound to fit into Christian radio,” Wilson explained. “When you feel like you’re in your calling, which is what God’s called you to do…it’s like He’s given me this confidence to walk in it and just to go, ‘This is who I am, and I’m not going to apologize for it,’ and so that’s really what this album is — it’s me standing firm in who I am.”

She concluded, “There’s nothing that has been compromised in my faith, there’s no watered-down messaging of Jesus…but [the music is] also very country at the same time.”

While Wilson is confident in her choices now, she admitted that she was initially apprehensive about going full-country.

“I was hesitant at first,” she told PEOPLE. “I said, ‘I’m not gonna change who I am to do country music.’ And [Universal Music Group exec Cindy Mabe] said, ‘We want you to be exactly who you are. We don’t want you to change a thing, and we need you to bring God back into country music.’”

Wilson’s career is only getting bigger these days. She recently took home the Female Artist of the Year award at the K-Love Fan Awards.

“I cannot believe I won Female Artist of the Year,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank You Jesus & thank all of YOU for voting for me!!!! I’m blown away.”

She also just celebrated a No. 1 single. Movieguide® previously reported:

Anne Wilson’s latest single, “Strong,” just took the No. 1 spot on Christian radio.

“‘Strong’ is officially #1 on @mediabasecharts Christian Radio,” Wilson posted on Instagram. “This wouldn’t be possible without you, Jesus! Thank you so much to everyone who’s listened to this song, I am forever grateful.”

The song is part of her latest album, “REBEL,” which sees the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter step into the world of country music.

“I didn’t change who I was,” Wilson told PEOPLE about the shift. “I stuck to who I am and what I believe, and it’s really cool to see how it’s all come together.”
