Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani have joined a team bringing the story of THE WIZARD OF OZ to a new generation of children through a TV show on Prime Video titled DOROTHY.

“We’re really excited about all the possibilities this show brings, and I’m so grateful that Gina [Matthews] shared the idea with me …” Shelton said. “I knew right away it was something Gwen would connect with. Her creativity and perspective are such a natural fit for this project.”

“It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me,” Stefani added.

While THE WIZARD OF OZ has continued to capture the imagination of the world since it first released in 1939 – leading to multiple sequels, remakes and spinoffs – many of these stories have been aimed at teens and adults, rather than kids. Last year’s WICKED, for example, features many lessons and themes that are not appropriate for children such as the glorification of occultism and moral relativism, despite being rated PG. Shelton and Stefani’s show, however, is specifically created for children.

“I’ve been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child,” said Gina Matthews, the creator of the show. “The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness – and a lot of grit – we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever.”

While the show likely won’t include explicitly Christian material, the lessons presented in the show will hopefully be Biblical as Shelton and Stefani are both strong Christians. They have also incorporated faith into their music in the past, unafraid to share their beliefs with the public.

“I believe in God now more than I ever have in my life,” Shelton said. “The biggest part of that is just how [Gwen] came into my life and now our relationship. It’s just too weird. If you take God out of it, it doesn’t make sense. If you put God into it, everything that’s happened with us makes sense.”

DOROTHY is only just going into production and does not have a release date yet. However, it will likely drop on Prime Video as Amazon is the studio creating the show.
