Christian singer Brooke Ligertwood shared how God can take a powerful song and make it something truly incredible by filling it with a life that it otherwise would not have.
“I look at the writers in our world, and they work really hard,” Ligertwood told Relevant. “But then God takes their work and breathes something into it that we’re not clever enough to accomplish.”
“I’m writing to try to serve the mechanic who works overtime to pay his mortgage or the doctor who comes into church exhausted or the single mom who is at her wit’s end,” Ligertwood added, explaining what she hopes to achieve through her music. “I’m trying to articulate what we know of God from Scripture.”

Ligertwood believes that Christian music is so powerful partially because it has the ability to speak to aspects of the Lord that someone might not be open to if they heard it in a sermon. For Ligertwood, this often means focusing on the hurt in her own life and declaring how God has been faithful through her trials.
“I’ve found that every word I get to declare in this collection has stood true as getting to sit in these prayed lyrics during this process has been a balm to my rickety heart. May it be the same for those who listen,” she said just before the release of her album Eight.
The singer’s heart for the Lord is even more on display through her approach to songwriting. Rather than desiring everything to be about herself, so she can take some of the glory, Ligertwood almost always tries to release songs that are collaborations, so some listeners will not even realize she wrote the song.
“I think it’s so important that I’m always part of something that’s bigger than me and not just about me,” she said in 2022. “I love being part of a team.”
“I’m not trying to build anything. I’m not trying to build up a legacy as Brooke Ligertwood,” she later added. “At this point, it’s obedience and surrender on repeat every day of my life.”
This approach allows Ligertwood to create some of the most powerful and enduring songs to come out in recent years including “What a Beautiful Name” and “Who You Say I Am.” Praise the Lord for Ligertwood’s obedience to her calling and her contentment in letting the Lord get all the glory over her own fame.
