But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

– Job 12:7-10

God has supplied all our needs in some very interesting ways. One of the most joyous was a later-life desire of my wife who had been on chemotherapy since 1996, to have a companion dog.

Since I travel a lot, this was not my idea. I had grown up breeding dogs and showing them in New York dog shows and was not anxious to have all the responsibility. After all, who’s going to take care of the dog when I travel? However, I prayed that God would meet Lili’s needs.

On a trip from Nashville to L.A., I had dinner with a friend who had just a litter of very expensive Bernese Swiss mountain dogs. After a few moments, he said, “We’re going to sell these for thousands of dollars.” Off handedly, I mentioned that Lili wanted a dog, and he said that he would give us one.

Better yet, his wife brought it on a plane to California. Since he was a Bernese, a Swiss-mountain dog, I named him Calvin. He quickly proved himself to be totally Armenian in his values, devouring my theology books and wreaking havoc where he should be more obedient. Even so, it’s nice that God provides for all our needs according to his riches and glory.

God provides for all our needs.
