Can Joel Smallbone Survive America’s Most ‘Formidable’ Gas Station?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Buc-ees is a one-stop shop (literally), but if you’re not familiar with it, it can be just a little overwhelming, as for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone discovered.
The native Australian and his wife Moriah Peters stopped at the gas station, souvenir shop, deli, bakery, convenience store, retail store, restroom stop and tourist destination for “A formidable American experience.”
“This is the first time this man has ever been into a Buc-ees,” Peters said in an Instagram video. “Ok Joel, tell me everything, how do you feel?” she asked.
“Very large,” Smallbone, a Teddy Bear Award® nominee, said. The video showed Smallbone walking through the Buc-ees merch speechless as Peters explained the truck stop’s wide variety of wares.

“Would you maybe like a lunch pails with Buc-ee’s face on it? Or a ‘Be my valentine’ sparkly hat? You could also buy your little nephew a baby outfit or a cowhide pillow? But they also don’t like the red one. They have a pink trucker hat because this is a trucker station actually. A Tennessee shaped little wooden drawer? Or maybe these signs that say ‘be our guest’ or ‘God is good.’ And then they also have marshmallows,” she said.
Fans had fun in the comment section.
“But, did you visit the restrooms? Immaculate,” one user said about the clean restrooms that Buc-ees has a reputation for. Another person said, “Haha! 😂 this was everything amazing! LOL his face and eyes trying to look as fast as your commentating was going! Ha! Glorious.”
Buc-ee’s got its start in the 1980s when Arch Aplin III bought an empty lot in Lake Jackson, Texas. The name was inspired by his longtime nickname, Beaver, and his dog, Buck, Southern Living reported. Today, Buc-ee’s boasts 50 locations across nine states.
