Can SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Sling a Box Office Record?

By Movieguide® Staff

Although there’s no concrete data yet, SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME is expected to make, at minimum, $290 million in its opening weekend, according to Deadline. If things go better than expected, Marvel can expect a $380 million opening.

The movie’s projected sales prove that not only is the industry is coming out of the COVID slump of 2020 and most of 2021, but audiences will return to theaters in droves for movies that redemptive messages. For context, Marvel’s latest offering, ETERNALS, opened at just $161.7 million.

The largest global opening for a Spider-Man movie is Sony’s SPIDER-MAN 3, with $381.66 million. However, NO WAY HOME’s predecessor, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, nabbed second place, with $295.8 million. The movie went on to become the highest grossing Sony movie ever made, with a grand total of $1.13 billion.

FAR FROM HOME was also selected as one of Movieguide’s Best Movies for Mature Audiences.

Many are predicting that NO WAY HOME could become the first movie during the pandemic to cross $1 billion without a release in China. The movie does not yet have a release date there, and is unlikely to get one until next year.

Movieguide®’s review of the film says:

SPIDER-MAN:  NO WAY HOME is filled with fun surprises and twists, plus lots of action. There’s plenty of serious jeopardy leading to stirring, sad and tearful moments. The performances are perfectly melded with the story’s twists and turns, including some surprise appearances. NO WAY HOME has a strong moral, redemptive premise that everyone deserves a second chance, even supervillains. In the movie, Aunt May inspires Peter to do the right thing and give the supervillains a second chance to set things right. SPIDER-MAN:  NO WAY HOME has many light obscenities and profanities, intense action violence and occult content.
