Chip and Joanna Gaines’ next show has nothing to do with home renovations. Instead, they will executive produce a reality TV show that follows three families as they give up modernity to go BACK TO THE FRONTIER.
“Leaving modern life to find what matters most. Three families give up modern comforts and embark on a journey back to the 1800s frontier,” a description of the show shared on the Max Instagram account reads.
A newly released trailer offers a taste of what the show has to offer and highlights some of the trials and triumphs these families face. While giving up the comforts of today is difficult, there appears to be a general air of joy shared among these families as they create lasting memories and engage with each other and the world in ways that modern technology prevents.
“Going back to the frontier, it’s going to be life-changing for all of us,” one parent says in the trailer. Another adds, “We want to go backward so that we can go forward in the right direction.”
“One out of three families fail when they’re on the homestead, so we need to work together,” a parent says later in the trailer as viewers see the families working together to harvest crops and build new shelters.
BACK TO THE FRONTIER is unlike anything the Gaines’ have ever worked on in the past, but they are extremely excited to have been a part of the show — as executive producers — and see this social experiment come to life.
“This social experiment is unlike anything we’ve ever created, but we’ve always been drawn to the back-to-basics way of life and loved the ida of giving families a chance to go back in time to experience life as 1880s homesteaders — without all the distractions and technology of the 21st century,” the couple told PEOPLE.

“They learned it was anything but easy, but seeing the way these families come together to survive is something that stays with you,” they continued. “We can’t wait to share their journeys with you this July!”
As the families fight to survive day-to-day, they also face a looming deadline: at the end of the series they are judged on whether they were able to stock up enough on food and other resources to weather the winter.
BACK TO THE FRONTIER premieres on July 10 on Magnolia Network and Max.
