Chris Pratt believes AI will always be imperfect.

In his new movie, MERCY, Pratt plays a detective accused of murdering his wife. He has 90 minutes to defend himself to an AI judge. If he fails, he’ll be put to death, Church Leaders said.

“What are your thoughts on AI outside of the film?” a reporter asked Pratt at the premiere of the movie last week. “In a sense, in this film, it’s almost like playing God.”

“Oh yeah, well, AI is man-made, you know? And so it cannot be God,” Pratt answered. “It’s inherently flawed, and it always will be because it’s made by the brokenness of man. So…it’ll always be limited the way we are limited. It is not God, and it will not replace God.”

In another interview that night, Pratt said the role was unlike any he’d played before.

“It was really challenging and technical…it’s visually really stunning, and I think it’s a special movie,” he said.

Regarding the movie’s AI theme, Pratt added, “It does feel really prescient and more so now than even when we were filming it a year and a half ago. I mean, the world has changed so much and so, as we promote the film, a lot of conversations are coming up around our use of AI.”

Movieguide® gave MERCY a -2 rating.

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads, “MERCY has a strong moral, pro-family worldview about pursuing justice and promoting family ties. However, it has two villains who go too far, though they don’t get away with their crimes. MERCY also has strong violence and excessive foul language, including six strong profanities. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.”

An AI judge “could happen tomorrow,” said the movie’s director, Timur Bekmambetov. “It takes too long to make movies. In today’s world, when you make a movie about the future, it’s very dangerous because everything is so compressed [with] the avalanche of innovations and tragedies and geopolitical stuff. What we think will be in 10 years, it’s happening today, and it’s scary.”

In real life, Pratt is very careful how he uses AI but thinks it’s a cool tool for everyday basic tasks.

“I’m also trying to implement some safeguards around my own health and certainly to help with my children and my family around it,” he said recently. “I feel a little differently. I don’t think it’s because of being in this movie. It’s just being in the world.”

The movie came out on Jan. 23 and is currently playing in theaters.
