Everyone’s favorite lasagna-loving cat has arrived on Netflix and is proving to be a hit.
THE GARFIELD MOVIE found success in theaters following its release in May, generating over $232m at the worldwide box office. Its popularity is continuing on Netflix.
“Just shy of four months after making its theatrical debut, THE GARFIELD MOVIE premiered on Netflix as part of the streamer’s exclusive rights deal with Sony, and it’s already proving to be a hit for both parties,” MSN reported. “At the time of writing, the movie is maintaining the No. 1 spot in the Top 10 movies in the U.S. today, this coming a full week after its premiere.”
Chris Pratt plays the titular cat, and the movie also stars Samuel L. Jackson and Hannah Waddingham.
Following its release, Pratt emphasized that he was grateful for the movie’s family-friendly storyline.
“It’s OK for kids, it’s safe for kids,” he said. “My son has seen it and he loved it but my daughters haven’t seen it yet.”
Movieguide® also celebrated THE GARFIELD MOVIE’s “moral worldview” and gave it a +1 content score. Part of the review reads:
THE GARFIELD MOVIE is an animated comedy that shows how Garfield became the gluttonous feline we all know and love. In the beginning, Garfield is in an alley with his father telling Garfield that he will be right back as he goes to find food. Garfield goes into a restaurant where Jon feeds Garfield some Italian food and takes Garfield home. Soon, Garfield is caught in a trap by two thugs, who take him and Jon’s dog, Odie, to an abandoned mall, where an evil cat named Jinx awaits. Jinx forces Garfield, Odie and Garfield’s long-lost father Vic, to steal milk from Lactose Farms, one bottle for each day she was imprisoned when Vic abandoned her.
The best part of THE GARFIELD MOVIE is the father and son relationship. At the end, it is deeply emotive and brings tears. It also has some very funny, exciting moments. THE GARFIELD MOVIE is never boring. It also has many heartwarming emotional moments and a very strong moral worldview. However, some of the scary moments and jeopardy in THE GARFIELD MOVIE are a little too intense.
THE GARFIELD MOVIE marks yet another animated success for Pratt.
“His other animated roles include Emmet Brickowski in THE LEGO MOVIE and Barley Lightfoot in ONWARD. Last year, he voiced the legendary video game character Mario in THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, which went on to become the second highest-grossing movie of 2023, even in spite of its mixed reviews,” Screen Rant said.
