A new biographical documentary following SUPERMAN star Christopher Reeve’s life will premiere in theaters this fall.
While at the CinemaCon 2024, DC Studio head Peter Safran announced Warner Bros.’s acquisition of SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY.
Per Deadline, “Safran showed a moving trailer involving Reeve’s son’s distress after the horse accident that left the actor paralyzed, the actor’s connection to pal Robin Williams, and his prep for his role as the Man of Steel in the 1978 Richard Donner classic SUPERMAN.”
Movieguide® previously reported on the documentary:
SUPERMAN star Christopher Reeve died 20 years ago, but his memory lives on through the new documentary SUPER/MAN: A CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last weekend…
The documentary features “Never-before-seen home movies and extraordinary personal archives [that] reveal how Christopher Reeve went from unknown actor to iconic movie star as the ultimate screen superhero. He learned the true meaning of heroism as an activist after suffering a tragic accident that left him quadriplegic and dependent on a ventilator to breathe.”
“All three of Reeve’s children, Matthew and Alexandra with Gae Exton, and Will with wife Dana Reeve, participated in the documentary, which shares incredible new details and behind-the-scenes footage from Reeve’s life,” Fox News reported.
James Gunn confirmed the news of the acquisition on social media, writing, “I saw the stunningly beautiful documentary SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY a couple weeks ago. It emotionally floored me. Peter & I knew DC Studios needed to be involved & I’m grateful to Peter & our WBD family at Warner Bros, HBO, CNN & Max having worked so hard to acquire it. It’s a wonderful film by wonderful filmmakers & Reeve’s family not only for people like me who love Reeve’s work but for everyone.”
“Everyone at Warner Bros. Discovery is incredibly proud to come together as one company to partner with Christopher Reeve’s family and the filmmakers behind SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY and bring his personal journey to audiences the world over,” said a Warner Bros. spokesperson. “WBD’s DC Studios, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, CNN Films and Max are grateful for the opportunity to honor one of our company’s most cherished creative partners and to celebrate Christopher’s rich life and career.”
