Clint Eastwood Classic Set for Remake

The classic western movie A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS is set for a new remake by Euro Gang Entertainment.
A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS helped launch Eastwood’s career as a western movie icon; it also spawned the spaghetti western genre that defined Hollywood in the 1960s and ’70s.
“I am delighted to partner with Gianni again having worked with him on THOSE ABOUT TO DIE, and with Simon on the remake of this classic film, which created a whole new sub-genre in film spawning over 500 European westerns,” said Italian producer Enzo Sisti.
“Enzo is one of the most experienced producers in the film business, and we are fortunate to call him our partner on this incredible project,” added Euro Gang Entertainment founders Gianni Nunnari and Simon Horsman. “We are determined to produce a remake that does justice to the great Sergio Leone’s classic.”
A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS “is the story of a wandering gunfighter with on name who plays two rival families against each other in a town torn apart by greed, pride, and revenge,” per Deadline. The movie is itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s samurai movie YOJIMBO, which is itself patterned after themes in Dashiel Hammet’s novels THE GLASS KEY and RED HARVEST, plus the 1942 filmed version of THE GLASS KEY starring Alan Ladd.
The original movie was released in Europe in 1964 where it grossed over $1 million. Three years later, it would come to America, grossing $14.5 million and spawning two more movies in the series, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE ($15 million gross) and THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY ($25 million).
It remains unclear if Euro Gang Entertainment plans on remaking the entire series or if they will stick to just the first movie.
Nunnari’s previous work includes THE DEPARTED, the 300 franchise and SE7EN. Sisti, meanwhile, has worked on THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, THE ENGLISH PATIENT and EQUALIZER III.
The A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS remake does not yet have a planned release date.
