THE CHOSEN’s Abe Bueno-Jallad, who plays Big James, spilled all the details about Season 5, LAST SUPPER.
“This show was overwhelming from the beginning, with the magnitude of intensity that the select group of fans had. And now it’s everywhere,” the actor told The Christian Post.
“Every day you got to go into work and bring to life the reality that we are being hunted, that we are being persecuted. And that we must be careful,” he said of Season 5, which leads up to Jesus’ crucifixion. “You’re not exactly chipper in the morning…it does take a sort of focus.”
He says that the role has made him look more deeply at the scripture and work hard to portray his role accurately.
“What you’re gonna see in these subsequent seasons is just someone more grounded, more open, more vulnerable and listening,” he said. “Which is just so different.”
In this season, the religious politics really come into play, and the threat to Jesus’ life becomes evident.
“Season 5 is the turning point,” the actor said. “Season 4 was the half point. Season 5 is where, unfortunately, the politic of the time is really causing a divide…something breaks in Season 5.”
“Shooting the Last Supper alone — two weeks in that room — we knew that we were trying our hardest to give this an honest shot,” he said. “Everything’s bigger, but…it tested us. And the test is only supported by the fact that the show is bigger. If it gets bigger, we all have to expand.”
Though much of the season takes a somber tone, Jonathon Roumie, who portrays Jesus, says the scenes are beautiful.
“It’s going to be stunningly beautiful for people to see. And we sort of present it in a very unique way, but in a way that is super powerful,” he said. “I hope it lands the way it felt when we did it because there were moments where many of us were just kind of like wiping away the tears from our eyes right after the scene, or during the scene. It’s really truly beautiful.”
Director Dallas Jenkins said, “The portrayal of that in Season 5 is exciting and heartbreaking. How we portray scenes between Jesus and Judas when Jesus knows what’s coming. It’s been really fascinating to portray.”
THE CHOSEN: LAST SUPPER (Season 5) Parts 1, 2 and 3 are still playing in select theaters, and the first episodes have begun to stream on Prime Video.
