THE CHOSEN director Dallas Jenkins just opened up about Jesus’ crucifixion in Season 6.

“We’re working on Season 6 right now,” he told Crosswalk Headlines. “In fact, we’re going to be filming the actual crucifixion here in the next two weeks, and it’s — yeah — it’s not family-friendly. I don’t think the crucifixion was. I don’t think we’d be doing an authentic betrayal if we tried to clean it up.”

Mel Gibson’s THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST was rated R for its graphic scenes and was the highest-grossing R-rated film for 20 years.

“At the same time,” Jenkins added, “we have different tools in our toolbox than what Mel Gibson had. We’ve had five seasons of emotional connection, and so when you get to the crucifixion, I don’t need to do a lot of physicality and violence to get the point across. So we’ll still do some of that, but it won’t be quite as explicit as Mel’s.”

Star Jonathan Roumie recently said that filming the death of Jesus is the most trying task he’s ever had.

“This is the most difficult thing I think I’ve ever done. It’s the most difficult season,” he said.

“It’s the most difficult role, and this being the most difficult role in the most difficult season, with the physicality that is expected, that I feel is expected, and that ultimately we will portray during Christ’s suffering and death — His passion — I don’t know anything else that could be more challenging to me as a performer,” Roumie said.

Though he feels the pressure, he said he is putting his complete trust in God throughout the filming process.

Jenkins told Crosswalk that he hopes people draw people to Christ in the years to come.

“I hope that after watching THE CHOSEN, especially all seven seasons, you know and love Jesus more,” he said. “And when you know and love Jesus more, what do you want to do? You want to be discipled. You want to worship.”

The dirctor continued, “So what we’ve been seeing over the last couple of years is there’s been an increase in Bible sales, an increase in Bible literacy…And so if that continues and grows, I think that’s the best legacy we could have.”

The first episode of THE CHOSEN Season 5 is available early, on June 8, on YouTube. The first episode will be available on Prime Video on June 15. Select international markets will have access on June 13.
