Danny Gokey just revealed the secret he had been keeping for years and said that sharing it with others set him free.

“When I was younger, I kept a secret buried deep within me that I hid from everybody, even my parents,” he posted on Instagram. “It was something I planned on telling no one. In my young adolescent mind I had already convinced myself that God rejected me because of it, so I tried my hardest to keep it hidden because I couldn’t bear the thought of rejection from anyone else.”

Gokey continued, “Secrets buried alive never die, and this was affecting every area of my life.”

When he was in his 20s, Gokey finally told someone his secret but said they were unsure of how to help him, which led to the artist feeling “so much shame and [vowing] to never tell another soul.”

He started having breakdowns, and “In my 30s I had no choice but to tell my secret to my wife and my manager,” Gokey said. “This began my long journey of healing from the inside out.”

“My secret was that I had a particular type of OCD called scrupulosity that convinced me I had committed the unpardonable sin and would spend an eternity in hell,” he explained.

However, after telling his secret to loved ones and getting help and support, Danny Gokey said, “God has shown me that He truly does work everything together for our good. God has called me to give hope to others. This is why my music is so full of messages of hope.”

“Whatever you’re facing today, don’t hide it,” he concluded. “Expose it, because the Devil does his best work in the dark and in secret. These moments don’t last forever if we confront the lies we believe and allow the truth to set us free.”

Fans were supportive in the comments, with one writing, “Thank you so much for your openness about this. My OCD has caused me to question my salvation many times. God is helping me to take those thoughts captive, but it helps knowing you’re not alone.”

Another commented, “As a Therapist I can attest that many people struggle scrupulosity, so thank you for sharing your story and messages of hope. Bringing shame and fear into the light helps it heal.”

Danny Gokey often shares messages of support with his social media followers. In one recent post, he wrote, “Whatever season you’re in, DON’T GIVE UP!!! Trust that God is working it together for your good. Your circumstances are ‘Only For A Moment,’ but the glory He’s working will last forever!!!”

The Christian artist also recently celebrated his family in a sweet Father’s Day post.

“Some chapters of life you dream of but don’t fully know what to expect. Being a father has been the best, most fulfilling chapter of my life story,” Gokey wrote. “It comes with many challenges, but I never ever imagined it could be this good!! Thank you Lord for making me a father to my four beautiful children.”

By sharing his story, Gokey got rid of a huge weight and gave hope to others who might be struggling with the same condition.
