DC Studios CEO Confirms Three Stars to Resume Roles in DC Universe

DC Studios’ co-CEO and filmmaker James Gunn confirmed that Viola Davis, John Cena and Xolo Maridueña will resume their roles in DC’s new Universe.
On Wednesday, Gunn answered questions from confused fans on Threads.
One person asked, “You said ‘DC studios movies (and cannon) start with SUPERMAN: LEGACY.’ I and many others are still confused. Are the returning actors playing new versions of the same characters? Is this a J.K Simmons as J Jonah situation?”
In response, Gunn said, “Nothing is canon until CREATURE COMMANDOS next year—a sort of aperitif to the DCU — & then a deeper dive into the universe with SUPERMAN: LEGACY after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it’s okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.”
He followed up, adding, “And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and LEGACY.”
“Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller and John Cena will Peacemaker,” Gunn clarified.
The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Gunn’s remarks follow a tough stretch for DC films, with SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS, THE FLASH and BLUE BEETLE all having underperformed at the box office this year. AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM hits theaters Dec. 20 as the final movie from the studio’s previous regime.”
It isn’t just this year that DC underperformed. Last year, DC suffered a major flop with BLACK ADAM. Movieguide® previously reported on the possibility of Dwayne Johnson continuing as Black Adam in DC’s Universe:
‘James Gunn and I connected, and BLACK ADAM will not be in their first chapter of storytelling,’ Johnson shared last December. ‘However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.’
