Football coach Deion Sanders hasn’t revealed details about the unknown health condition that kept him from spring and summer training for the University of Colorado-Boulder.
At Big 12 Football Media Days, Sanders said, “I’m not here to talk about my health. I’m here to talk about my team.” When asked about his daily activities on the ranch, Sanders shared, “Average day I’m looking good. I’m living lovely. God has truly blessed me. Not a care in the world. Not a want or a desire in the world.”
Sanders added that in his mind, he’s “already back” and excited to work with his players, especially the ones he’s yet to meet.
Sanders’ son, Deion Jr., shared in a recent YouTube livestream that his father is “feeling well” and will soon share what he’s going through. On July 13, Sanders posted a video of himself and friends fishing and relaxing on the water.
The NFL Hall of Famer, 57, has always been open about his faith in God, an inspiring figure in the football world especially from his previous health issues. The docuseries COACH PRIME reveals that a “routine surgery” led to life-threatening blood clots that led to the amputation of two toes. Afterwards, it was discovered that his family had a history of blood clots.
The harrowing experience didn’t diminish Sanders’ spirit as he encouraged his team in a clip from the series: “Fellas, let’s go get it, let’s want it, let’s believe it, that it’s real and let’s go take advantage of the opportunity that we have.”

Sanders’ kind energy extends to not just his team but to his fans. On Father’s Day 2020, a fan recorded his dad’s tearful reaction when he was gifted a Deion Sanders jersey. Sanders responded by calling the fan’s father as a surprise. Additionally, this past Sunday, Sanders gave student reporter Andrew Cherico a shoutout, telling him he’s proud of his resilience and hard work especially due to his physical disability.
Sanders said, “I’m so darn proud of you, you have no idea. Because I was in a [wheel] chair at one point with these toes being amputated, and I know what you deal with on a daily basis…I’m proud of you man, truly.”
Sanders posts inspiring messages on X and Instagram, never shying away from his faith.
In one interview, he shared a powerful message of Jesus being the best role model for youth. He warns that people in the spotlight, like top athletes, may show their best for two hours every day, but he asked what about the other 22? They aren’t true role models; they’re models filling a role. Sanders reminded listeners to not forget the best role model we have as a blueprint for our lives. He continues to be an inspiring Christian in the sports world, his steadfast faith serving as a reminder to serve the Lord first and foremost.
Sanders looks forward to returning to Boulder for the upcoming football season, keeping his head high and his heart humble.
