Dennis Quaid Says God ‘Wants to Have a Relationship With Us’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Dennis Quaid recently shared his faith journey, calling it “something solid” that he relies on in hard times.

“It’s all about really filling that hole, that empty hole,” he explained on an episode of TBN’s PRAISE. “I identified always as a Christian, I think, but I didn’t really know what that was.”

It took hitting rock bottom for Quaid to realize he needed to change his life.

“After I did GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, where I played Jerry Lee Lewis…I was in rehab about six months after,” he said. “When you [get] out, you’ve still got that same hole. You might get sober, but you still have that same hole to fill, and I went back and read the Bible again. This time, it was the red words of Jesus in the New Testament that really hit me, and that was the beginning of my personal relationship with Jesus Christ.”

Quaid has previously spoken about that time, telling PEOPLE, “I remember going home and having kind of a white light experience that I saw myself either dead or in jail or losing everything I had, and I didn’t want that.”

“We’re all looking for the joy of life, and drugs give that to you and alcohol and whatever it is for anybody give that to you really quick,” the actor continued. “Then they’re fun and then they’re fun with problems, and then they’re just problems after a while. That’s really what we’re looking for, the joy of life, which is our gift, actually, the relationship with God that we all have. It’s at the bottom of it, the joy of being alive.”

He told TBN that he is “where I am today” because of his relationship with God.

“You have something solid there that you can go to in those times of trouble,” Quaid said of his faith.

He also encouraged others to pursue a deeper relationship with God, explaining, “He wants to have a relationship with us as much as we need a relationship with Him.”

Quaid spoke to The Christian Post about the rise in faith-based content, saying, “I’ve been actually kind of surprised by that, like by the success of I CAN ONLY IMAGINE — it’s not a Hollywood movie. Hollywood doesn’t understand their audience anymore. People want to go to the movies to feel things and can’t just discount the spirit, and people hunger for that. And so these stories are really getting a lot of traction these days.”
