Dennis Quaid Reveals How Music Career Began: ‘Always Part of Me’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Dennis Quaid explained how his music career began during an appearance on GOOD MORNING AMERICA, where he performed his song “Fallen.”

“Music was always a part of  me. It was music before it was acting because you could do it alone in your bedroom, you know, when you’re a kid,” Quaid told GOOD MORNING AMERICA. “And [music’s] been able to lace its way through [my career]. I played the killer, Jerry J. Lewis, and I’ve done several music movies and had a chance to do a Gospel record here.”

The actor released his Gospel album, “Fallen: A Gospel Record For Sinners,” earlier this year.

“In its first week out, the project debuted at No. 1 on the Top Christian/Gospel Albums chart. ‘Fallen’ had a landmark first week on the Billboard Top 200 Christian/Gospel chart, too: It landed in the Top 15,” Taste of Country reported.

Though Quaid grew up as a Christian, he fell away from his faith as fame caught his attention. Years later, however, Jesus recaptured his heart after He saved the actor from addiction.

Realizing that his life is not his own, Quaid now uses his platform to spread the Gospel. His newest album is just one of many projects he has worked on to make Jesus’ name known.

He shares his faith journey through the album, expressing how Jesus lifted him from his darkest moments into the light.

“I wanted the largest audience possible. That’s why I called it that,” Quaid said, explaining the album’s name.

While on GMA, he also updated fans about his upcoming movie about Ronald Reagan.

“It’s coming out in May of 2024,” he said. “It’s been a long time [coming]. We made it three years ago, and it’s been a journey, but here it comes.”

Quaid has previously shared that he was intimidated by this role, given his respect for the 40th president. Ultimately, though, it was a role he couldn’t pass up.

Movieguide® previously reported:

“I didn’t understand why they were offering me Ronald Reagan because I just didn’t see it,” Quaid told Entertainment Weekly. “I admired him so much, and so I had a chill of fear go down my spine when I was offered it. That’s usually kind of a sign that maybe I should do it, because it’s out of my comfort zone.”

SOUL SURFER’s Sean McNamara will direct with NO SAFE SPACE’s Mark Joseph producing. Quaid also starred in the faith-filled and Movieguide® Award-Winning SOUL SURFER.

REAGAN is adapted from conservative author Paul Kengor’s book “The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism” and will span Reagan’s life “from his childhood to his time in the oval office.”

Producer Mark Joseph revealed that he talked to over 50 people who knew Reagan personally to add to the sprawling biographical drama. The movie will dive into Reagan’s childhood, his time in Hollywood, and his constant fight against communism in the entertainment industry and America.

“The challenge was me doing the research and finding out how to make it look right and not look cheesy,” director McNamara said.
