Denzel Washington Encourages Miami Heat: ‘Keep Raising The Standard About How You Carry Yourself’

By Movieguide® Staff

Hollywood legend and man of faith Denzel Washington recently offered advice to NBA players of the Miami Heat.

“Keep raising the standard about how you carry yourself,” Washington told Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler, and other members of the team. “Keep teaching. Keep leading. Keep following. Learn from the best. That’s what I’ve done, and pass it on.”

With an attentive audience, the REMEMBER THE TITANS actor did not shy away from giving spiritual wisdom.

“Last thing I’ll say, which I’ve said a lot of times: You never see a U-Haul behind a hearse,” Washington explained, referring to material items. “I’ll say it again. You never see a U-Haul behind a hearse. Can’t take it with you. Egyptians tried it; all they got was robbed.

“But, leaving money aside, you can’t take it with you. But you can leave it here — your influence, your power, your wisdom, your ability to touch people,” he added.

Washington reminded the players of their audience and encouraged them to “lead quietly.”

“Everybody is watching y’all; everybody’s got a favorite guy,” he said of the player’s fans. “I spoke to the Dodgers the other day. I went in with a Yankee hat on. I didn’t even care. Elston Howard was a black player in the 60s — and I wanted to be him. I tried to walk like him. I played catcher. So you know that they’re watching and they’re following.”

“God bless you,” Washington concluded.

Movieguide® previously reported on Washington’s faith:

Denzel Washington continues to spread his Christian faith as he discusses his acting career and the hand God has had in it.

While appearing on DESUS & MERO, Washington said that “by the grace of God,” he was “given the natural ability to act.”

Washington also talked about the importance of humility while working in Hollywood.

“One of the most important lessons in life that you should know is to remember to have an attitude of gratitude, of humility, understand where the gift comes from,” he said.

The star also made sure to note that everything he has achieved has been through the power of God.

“It’s not mine,” he said, referring to his career successes. “It’s been given to me by the grace of God.”
