Derek Hough’s Wife Makes Red Carpet Return Following Craniectomy

By Movieguide® Contributor

Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert made their first joint red carpet appearance following Erbert’s craniectomy last year.

“Went to an event for the first time since surgery,” Erbert wrote in an Instagram story along with a picture of her and Hough. The couple attended the Hulu on Disney+ launch event, walking the red carpet together. That same day, Erbert also announced she will be rejoining Hough on the “Symphony of Dance” tour.

“I am just so excited to get back out and dance again after having something so traumatic happen,” she told PEOPLE. “Dance has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and so I’m just really excited to get out there and do what I love and also to see the people that have supported me throughout this entire healing journey.”

The couple have been very open about Erbert’s recovery and return to dancing.

“My healing journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and being able to dance again is igniting my soul in all the ways; speeding up my recovery even more,” Erbert wrote in a recent Instagram post. “I am so appreciative of the doctors who have supported me in my decision to dance again and my team of specialists that have been assembled to assure that my health and safety is priority. I cannot wait for you all to see this show! It was so meaningful when we opened last year and now, after everything that has happened, it is truly even more special.”

“We cannot wait to dance together again on stage and be back with all of our fans and thank them,” Hough added. “Thank you all for the amazing support that you’ve shown during this time. We cannot wait and we’ll see you very, very soon.”

In December 2023, Erbert was rushed to the hospital because of bleeding in her skull. Movieguide® reported:

DANCING WITH THE STAR’s Derek Hough is opening up about his wife, Hayley Erbert’s, health emergency that occurred late last year.

“It was, you know, just a million miles an hour, and then it just came to a screeching halt…very, very quickly, and it was jolting, to say the least,” Hough told GOOD MORNING AMERICA.

While wrapping up the “Symphony of Dance” tour in Washington D.C., a blood vessel burst in Erbert’s brain, causing her to be confused and disoriented. Upon arriving at the hospital, she was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma. She underwent an emergency craniotomy and cranioplasty.

“I think anybody who’s experienced anything dramatic or sudden and unexpected can understand that feeling of just, you know, just disbelief for how it feels unfathomable,” Hough continued

“During that time, I was realizing how important she is not just in my love, my life, but just in everyday things,” he said. “I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t even know how to do that,’ or ‘I don’t know how to ask,’ Hayley does, that’s how reliant you are on her…It was a moment to step up for sure. In many, many ways. I thought she was strong. And I had no idea. I actually had no idea how strong she was really until just a couple months ago.”
