TOP GUN director Christopher McQuarrie revealed that he already has the plot for the third movie in the franchise planned out — and that it was easy to figure out after he cracked the code for TOP GUN: MAVERICK.
“It wasn’t hard,” McQuarrie told the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, per Variety. “I thought it would be, and that’s a good place to go from as you walk into the room going, ‘Come on, what are we going to do?’ And Ehrne Kruger pitched something and I went, ‘Mhm actually,’ and we had one conversation about it and the framework was there. So, no, it’s not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack.”
“It’s as you start to execute it, and as you start to interrogate it, as you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are,” McQuarrie continued. “It’s not the action, it’s not even the level or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it’s none of those things – it’s the emotion.”
McQuarrie would certainly know best as TOP GUN: MAVERICK was one of the movies that saved the box office following the pandemic. It ended the year as the second-highest grossing movie of the year, bringing in $1.495 billion. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

Since then, McQuarrie and Tom Cruise – the star of TOP GUN and TOP GUN: MAVERICK – have continued their partnership and created even more blockbuster movies. This past weekend, their collaboration MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FINAL RECKONING helped smash the Memorial Day weekend box office record alongside Disney’s LILO & STITCH live action remake.
While TOP GUN 3 has yet to have an official release date, the movie has been in the works since at least the beginning of 2023. Now that the next MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie it out, the third movie in the TOP GUN franchise may prove to be the next project Cruise and McQuarrie embark on together.
