Disney Shares Release Dates for MANDALORIAN Movie, TOY STORY 5

By Movieguide® Contributor

Disney has revealed the release dates for some of their most anticipated upcoming projects, from a MANDALORIAN movie to the live-action MOANA.

“Jon Favreau’s big screen version of THE MANDALORIAN — THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU— is the updated Star Wars title on May 22, 2026,” Deadline wrote

Variety reported that the upcoming Star Wars movie “signals that Disney is getting serious about reinvigorating its big-screen STAR WARS franchise after mostly focusing on streaming shows like THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT and OBI-WAN KENOBI.”

That isn’t the only Disney project dropping in 2026. Deadline also shared that TOY STORY 5 and the live-action version of MOANA are expected to premiere in the summer of 2026.

MOANA’s release date was moved back a year so as not to compete with MOANA 2. Disney recently shared some hints about what fans can expect from the MOANA sequel.

Movieguide® previously reported on both movies:

MOANA 2 is coming to theaters Nov. 27.

“MOANA remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement about the new movie. “We can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when MOANA 2 comes to theaters this November.”

Auli’i Cravalho is expected to reprise her role as Moana, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is still in negotiations to return as Maui. However, Johnson is set to play Maui in an upcoming live-action remake of MOANA.

“One of the exciting things about that was actually finding our Moana and how exciting that has been,” the actor said. “The global search to find our Moana, which — between you and I, we found her — not gonna tell you yet. [It’s] very exciting.”

“Three years [after] her first voyage, Moana is on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui,” Disney said in a statement about the sequel. “Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

TRON: ARES, another highly anticipated sequel, is set to come out Oct. 10, 2025.

Movieguide® previously reported on TRON: ARES’ production:

TRON: ARES will star Jared Leto, Evan Peters and Jodie Turner-Smith.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The new film will spend more time in the real world” and will “center on a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.”

Yahoo! reported that the third TRON movie has been in development since “the early days of TRON: LEGACY’s 2010 release.”

Directors and writers came and went, and Disney scrapped a 2015 production start date before it was greenlit in 2023.
