Disney Announces MOANA 2: ‘Adventure Unlike Anything She’s Ever Faced’
By Movieguide® Contributor
MOANA 2 is coming to theaters Nov. 27.
“MOANA remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement about the new movie. “We can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when MOANA 2 comes to theaters this November.”
Originally developed as a TV show, MOANA 2 will feature an “expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.”
“After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced,” a synopsis of the movie reads.
Auli’i Cravalho is expected to reprise her role as Moana, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is still in negotiations to return as Maui. However, Johnson is set to play Maui in an upcoming live-action remake of MOANA.
“One of the exciting things about that was actually finding our Moana and how exciting that has been,” the actor said. “The global search to find our Moana, which — between you and I, we found her — not gonna tell you yet. [It’s] very exciting.”
Cravalho will not feature in the live-action MOANA but will serve as an executive producer.
“I am truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that helped inspire her story, and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come,” the actress said.
MOANA is one of Disney’s most successful recent releases, making over $680 million at the box office.
A portion of the Movieguide® review for MOANA reads:
MOANA is a definite crowd-pleaser, with incredible animation, catchy music and great character development. The voice performances are also superb. The movie contains strong moral elements promoting perseverance, kindness, self-sacrifice, courage, and humility. However, the story includes references to Polynesian mythology. Thus, a demigod is a major character, and there’s a reference to reincarnation. On the positive side, Moana has a strong desire to protect her people and follow her true calling. Caution is advised for children due to MOANA’s pagan mythology.
