Disney Announces Remastered SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS

By Movieguide® Contributor

Disney announced plans to rerelease SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS in a restored and remastered 4K edition.

The new version of the classic movie will be available for purchase starting October 10.

Variety reported that this project is part of Disney’s ongoing efforts to restore and preserve their classic movies. They previously released a restored 4K version of CINDERELLA.

The project is part of Disney’s 100th-anniversary celebration, which includes theater showings of popular Disney and Pixar movies such as THE INCREDIBLES and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

A live-action SNOW WHITE movie is also in the works, starring WEST SIDE STORY’s Rachel Zegler.

“Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me,” the actress said of her casting as the iconic Disney princess.

Movieguide® previously reported on Zegler’s casting:

Disney announced that actress Rachel Zegler would tackle the lead role of Snow White in their upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic 1937 animated movie, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARVES, Deadline reported

Zegler, who is also slated to star as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming reimagining of WEST SIDE STORY, will portray Disney’s first princess in the remake set to come out in 2022.

“Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale,” the movie’s director, Marc Webb, said.

The remake is already causing controversy, as Zegler and co-star Gal Gadot have spoken out against the original movie’s “problematic” storyline and promised a more progressive take on the fairytale.

David Hale Hand, son of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS co-director David Dodd Hand, said he “totally disagree[s]” with the direction of the new movie.

“I know my dad and Walt [Disney] would also very much disagree with it,” he said. “There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.”
