Disney Reportedly Asks Pixar Animators to Remove ‘Nearly Every Moment’ of LGBT Affection

By Movieguide® Contributor

Pixar employees claim they are being censored by Disney executives. It started with Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s response to the recently passed legislation in Florida known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

Chapek sent out a memo to employees which states in part, “The ‘biggest impact’ the company can make “in creating a more inclusive world is through the inspiring content we produce.”

But Pixar employees offered their own take on the matter. According to Variety:

In a statement attributed to “the LGBTQIA+ employees of Pixar, and their allies” obtained by Variety, employees of the animation studio allege that Disney corporate executives have demanded cuts from “nearly every moment of overtly gay affection… regardless of when there is protest from both the creative teams and executive leadership at Pixar. …

…“We at Pixar have personally witnessed beautiful stories, full of diverse characters, come back from Disney corporate reviews shaved down to crumbs of what they once were,” the letter states. “Even if creating LGBTQIA+ content was the answer to fixing the discriminatory legislation in the world, we are being barred from creating it.”

While some may refer to the move as censorship, Disney stakeholders might call it a good business decision. There was a dip in Disney’s profits in 2020 and Movieguide® reported that at the annual shareholders meeting, “One Disney shareholder complained that the company was losing money over LGBT themes in their recent projects, according to a New York Times reporter.”

However, parents have their own concerns of decreasing morality and biblical standards in Pixar’s projects, as Disney has been increasingly including LGBT content in its new releases.

An especially bold example of Disney testing the waters was in the Pixar short OUT, the story of a man who tells his parents he is homosexual. Another Disney/Pixar production ONWARD shows a lesbian police officer. The live action JUNGLE CRUISE with features Jack Whitehall as an openly gay main character.

Movieguide® urges parents to exercise caution when allowing children to ingest Disney entertainment. In an article about JUNGLE CRUISE, Movieguide® reports:

It’s not surprising that more LGBT content is infiltrating Disney movies. Last year’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST generated controversy and had audiences debating the issue far and wide. While there was much hype about the “exclusively gay moment,” it proved barely noticeable.

On the TV front, Disney has been much bolder. Disney Channel’s GOOD LUCK CHARLIE marked the first Disney sitcom to showcase lesbian parents. Since then, DOC MCSTUFFINS, the animated Disney series, showcased another pair of lesbian parents, and ANDI MACK featured a boy discovering he has a crush on a classmate.
