Blake Shelton’s new singing competition series, THE ROAD, will see if America’s aspiring artists have what it takes to make it big.
Along with Shelton, the series’ creators include YELLOWSTONE’s Taylor Sheridan and singer Keith Urban.
The series will follow Urban as he travels from city to city performing. He will choose aspiring singers to be his opening acts, and the audience members will decide if the new performers get to continue on.
“I spent a lot of my underage life playing in some seedy pubs, sometimes just for the bartender. So, I love the idea of throwing artists into a real-world environment to find out if they are artists,” Urban said of the show’s premise.
He continued, “Paying your dues sucks, but there are things in this business that can’t be taught, like how to put together a set list, whether to extend or cut a song during your performance or how to work the crowd. For me, touring has always been my first love. It’s where the rubber meets the road. But it’s the only road to take if you want to be a performer.”
A trailer of THE ROAD posted to Instagram highlighted the 12 contestants and the pressures they face.
People in the comment section can’t wait. “So excited for this 🔥🙌❤️👏” one user said. Another person added, “For Keith I will watch this show with pride 😂👏”
For Shelton, working with Sheridan is an incredible experience.
“I had been to his ranch, and I talked to him on the phone once or twice, just through mutual friends and stuff. [It wasn’t] until we started working on THE ROAD when I’d say I got to know him,” the former THE VOICE coach told PEOPLE.
He was impressed by Sheridan’s work ethic and creativity.
“When you get in the trenches with Taylor, it’s a completely differently thing when he’s in work mode. You can actually see the ideas, like smoke coming out of his ears when he’s working and thinking,” the singer added. “He’s such a visionary and creative guy, and he can’t turn it off. It’s amazing when you’re sitting there, and you can see the wheels turning.”
The aspiring artists are so excited for the opportunity.
“They’re so big-eyed about it,” Shelton explained. “They’re opening for Keith Urban at a bar, and there’s a huge, excited crowd in there waiting for some good country music.”
THE ROAD is set to air Sundays this fall on CBS.
