FULL HOUSE Star Conquered This Fear to Achieve Her Dream
By Movieguide® Contributor
FULL HOUSE star Jodie Sweetin didn’t think she was capable of directing a TV show, but she proved herself otherwise.
“I fell in love with directing, and it was an opportunity also for me to get to do something that, at some point in my life, I had told myself that I wasn’t capable of doing,” Sweetin said of getting to direct an episode of the FULL HOUSE spinoff, FULLER HOUSE.
“You know, when I first started college, which was just kind of a rough period of time for me anyway, I was a film major…I was struggling, and I remember I decided to drop out of being a film student because I remember looking around and thinking that these other kids had more of a passion for it than me,” she told former co-star Dave Coulier on his “Full House Rewind” podcast.
She continued, “So getting to come back as an adult on the very same stage with the very same people and get to do that…I said, you know, I told myself that…all of this was not a possibility for me anymore.”
Coulier chimed in, “Oh I would have never said that about you. I would say, ‘Oh, Jodie’s going to be fantastic.'”
“It’s taken me a long time to come back to all things where I’m like, ‘Oh, no, I can do this, and I actually love it.’ And I’m planning on directing a, hopefully, a rom-com at some point this year with a production company that I’ve been working with, and I’m writing stuff,” Sweetin revealed.
Sweetin has come a long way in the last few decades. Movieguide® previously reported on her struggle with addiction, which she ultimately overcame:
Sweetin spiraled, admitting in her book that she spent more than $60,000 on drugs like ecstasy, crystal meth and cocaine from 2006-2007. Sweetin continued to suffer until 2008 when Child Services opened an investigation after she admitted to driving under the influence with her daughter in the vehicle.
Sweetin had a choice: Kick the habit and raise her daughters or give up her children in favor of drugs or alcohol.
Sweetin ultimately chose her family, but says she still struggled with her mental health…
Sweetin works every day to maintain her sobriety and keep herself mentally healthy. She recognizes that there is no quick fix, but that it’s an ongoing process.
The actress loved reuniting with her FULL HOUSE co-stars for the spinoff.
She and Andrea Barber shared their trick to keep themselves from laughing while on set — looking at each other’s foreheads.
“Jodie and I do that all the time,” Barber said.
“Oh, yeah. Cause we would make each other laugh,” Sweetin added. “We would have these stupid bits between Stephanie and Kimmy that we’d have to do — particularly in FULLER HOUSE.”
“The forehead is a great place to look when you’re trying to keep it together,” she explained.
FULLER HOUSE ran from 2016-2020.
