‘He Gets Us’ Campaign’s Super Bowl Ad Explored How Jesus Changed This…

By Movieguide® Contributor

For the third year in a row, the “He Gets Us” campaign got a slot in the line-up of Super Bowl commercials.

He Gets Us” is a faith-based campaign with an agenda to “move beyond the mess of our current cultural moment to a place where all of us are invited to rediscover the love story of Jesus — Christians, non-Christians, and everybody in between. All of us.”

During the Kansas City Chiefs’ Feb. 9 matchup agains the Philadelphia Eagles, the campaign ran a 60-second ad that explored “how Jesus redefined true greatness and what it might mean for us,” a spokesperson said.

The ad features a series of images of people helping their neighbors as Jonny Cash’s song “Personal Jesus” plays.

“Jesus showed us what greatness really is,” it reads. “He gets us. All of us.”

“In a society struggling with division, loneliness, and a crisis of meaning, Jesus’ life and teachings offer a countercultural path toward healing,” said Ken Calwell, CEO at Come Near, the studio that acquired “He Gets Us.”

He continued, “We’ve been challenged and inspired by how Jesus said greatness is defined not by our achievements, wealth, or power, but by how we love and serve others.”

The campaign was inspired by creative director David Morring’s desire to help modern people relate to Jesus.

“How did the world’s greatest love story become known as a hate group? Our client saw Jesus as a radical activist who had been hate-jacked by extremists,” he wrote on his website. “Rather than his name being associated with unconditional love, his name was being used to judge, harm and divide. And they asked us to fix it. My partner and I came up with He Gets Us — an idea that took the experiences of a man that lived two thousand years ago and retold them through a modern lens that allowed both believers and skeptics to relate to him in a new way.”
