HILLBILLY ELEGY Author Builds Senate Campaign Around Conservatives Living Their Values

By Movieguide® Staff

Ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, state primary campaigns have already picked up speed as both parties hope to break the 50-50 tie in the U.S. Senate.

J.D. Vance hopes to receive the Ohio Senate position and encourage change in Washington D.C.

“I just feel like people don’t actually have somebody that stands up and fights for them, that’s willing to speak loudly and powerfully on the issues that they care about,” Vance told CBN News.

Vance noted that his central goals include securing the southern U.S. border, holding big tech accountable, and generating more jobs.

“I think people are really worried about censorship,” Vance said. “They’re really worried, whether at their workplaces or on social media, can they actually speak their mind, can they actually speak about Christian values without being shut down?”

Although Vance has no previous experience in public office, he has spent part of his career as a GOP commentator and authored the best-selling book “Hillbilly Elegy.”

“I’ve been very open about my views on a whole range of issues for a very long time now,” Vance asserted. “I really think the reason the media is attacking me is that they recognize that I’m a threat to the dominant ideas that are out there.”

“At the end of the day I think I’ve been very consistent in my view that we need to have a strong manufacturing policy in this country, we need to allow conservatives and Christians to actually live their values, to pass those values onto their children, we need to ensure that we’re not teaching our kids to hate America in American schools, we need to make sure that our southern border is controlled,” Vance added.

“Hillbilly Elegy” was later turned into a feature-length movie with Glenn Close and Amy Adams.

According to the Movieguide® review:

HILLBILLY ELEGY is based on a memoir written by Lawyer J.D. Vance, who tells his family’s story from his viewpoint. The movie splices together scenes from J.D.’s past to correlate with events occurring in 2011. Back in the 1990s, J.D.’s mom, Bev, had a series of jobs and boyfriends. His grandmother takes care of J.D. when Bev gets belligerent. Meanwhile, his older sister, Lindsay, looks after J.D. as best as she can while keeping her temperamental mother at arms’ length. Can J.D. and Lindsay rise above the personal and social problems in their family?

HILLBILLY ELEGY is a sobering take on life among many Appalachian people and the white working class in Ohio and Kentucky. The acting is phenomenal. Director Ron Howard does a sensational job. HILLBILLY ELEGY has a strong moral worldview and some poignant Christian moments. Despite their dysfunctional family, the people love one another and want each other to overcome problems and succeed. However, the movie also includes frequent foul language and depictions and references to drug abuse and multiple marriages. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises “extreme caution” for HILLBILLY ELEGY.
