While doing promo at the Cannes Film Festival for her newest movie, Jennifer Lawrence shared how becoming a mom opened her up to a whole new world of emotion.

“Having children changes everything. It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible,” Lawrence said when asked how becoming a parent impacted her perspective on life. “Not only do [my children] go into every decision of, if I’m working, where I’m working, when I’m working…they’ve taught me…I didn’t know that I could feel so much. My job has a lot to do with emotion, and they’ve opened up the world to me.”

“It’s almost like feeling like a blister or something,” she continued. “So sensitive. So they’ve changed my life, obviously, for the best, and they’ve changed me creatively.”

Lawrence and her husband Cooke Maroney share two children together. After getting married in 2019, they had their first son, Cy, in 2022, and they welcomed their second child earlier this year, though they have yet to publicly share the child’s name or gender.

“Jen’s doing well. Being back in that newborn phase with a toddler as well can be overwhelming, but Jen [has] such a great attitude. She’s meant to be a mom,” a source close to Lawrence told PEOPLE shortly after the birth. “She’s calm and just goes with the flow. Cooke’s a great dad too. They are good at balancing it all together.”

Having experience as a parent helped Lawrence in her new movie, DIE MY LOVE, as she plays a woman who is a new mom.

“As a mother, it as really hard to separate what I do as opposed to what [my character] would do,” she said. “And it was just heartbreaking…I had just had my firstborn, and there’s not really anything like postpartum. It’s extremely isolating. She doesn’t have a community. She doesn’t have her people. But the truth is xtreme anxiety and extreme depression is isolating, no matter where you are. You feel like an alien.”

Jennifer Lawrence is one of many celebrities who have had their lives turned upside down after becoming a parent. While some actors either take on fewer roles or quit entertainment entirely to look after their kids and be there for them, others use their children as their inspiration. As Lawrence learns to balance motherhood and her acting career, it is encouraging to see her talk about her and share just how much they mean to her.
