How Faith-Based Movie SOUND OF FREEDOM Found Success in Theaters
By Movieguide® Contributor
The Angel Studios film, SOUND OF FREEDOM, has made a total revenue of over $90 million so far. Although this shouldn’t be a surprise, many are asking “Why?”
There is a need for more openly religious content in the film industry. People are in need of a Savior in a world that is full of hatred and disunity.
In a press release for SOUND OF FREEDOM Jared Geesey, the Senior Vice President of Global Distribution with Angel Studios wrote, “SOUND of FREEDOM has become the people’s movie. It was chosen by over 100,000 people in the Angel Guild, fueled by untold tens of thousands through our Pay it Forward program, and is dominating the box office as the result of a ground-up, grassroots movement of everyday people who are making this an historic success. This is the opposite of the top down system developed by Hollywood gatekeepers. We are empowering people to be part of choosing, funding, and sharing stories that amplify light and impact culture.”
Kelsey Vlamis of Business Insider reported, “The film has been praised by commentators on Fox News, the most-watched cable news station, and right-wing pundits with large online followings. Former President Donald Trump himself planned to screen the film Wednesday.”
She added, “Movies marketed to conservative Christians have defied expectations and crushed at the box office in the past.”
Early this year, the Angel Studios film HIS ONLY SON had a gross revenue of $12 million after only having a $250,000 budget.
In addition, the hit television series, THE CHOSEN has found success now partnering with Lionsgate and signing on for another season.
SOUND OF FREEDOM is the biggest and top grossing film for Angel Studios yet, which only proves that there is a need for faith-based films in the industry.
Films marketed at conservative Christians have, indeed, performed well in the past. These films often target audiences who adhere to traditional Christian values and beliefs, and they seek to resonate with that particular demographic. By addressing themes such as faith, family, redemption, and moral dilemmas, these films can strike a chord with conservative Christian viewers.
Furthermore, other films that emphasize positive, family-friendly themes, and align with conservative values have also found success with this audience. By tailoring their marketing efforts and content to appeal to conservative Christians, filmmakers have been able to tap into a sizable and loyal segment of the film industry.
A part of Movieguide®’s review for SOUND OF FREEDOM reads:
SOUND OF FREEDOM follows the inspiring true story of Tim Ballard, a former government agent who puts his life on the line to rescue hundreds of children from sex trafficking. After an operation that saves a young boy from trafficking, Tim learns the boy’s sister has also been sold into the sex trade. At first, he continues to operate under Homeland Security, but when funds run out, he takes matters into his own hands. With the help of a small team, Tim launches an investigation to save the boy’s sister, save many other children and bring the perpetrators to justice.
SOUND OF FREEDOM is gripping and heartbreaking, but hope-giving. The movie sheds light on the need for strong people to stand up for God’s children around the world who are caught in the vicious, abusive system of sex trafficking. SOUND OF FREEDOM has a strong Christian, moral worldview that promotes sacrifice and the message that “God’s children are not for sale.” MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong and extreme caution for the movie’s mature subject matter, implied and depicted violence, and abuse of children.
