How God ‘Redeemed’ Ryan Ellis After Son’s Death

Christian singer-songwriter Ryan Ellis “wants people to encounter the Holy Spirit” through his music.
The “Heart of the Father” singer shared his heart in a video for the YouVersion Bible app.
“My main mission was like, I just wanted people to get encountered by the Holy Spirit. I wanted people to encounter God through worship and through music and for them to start having this conversation,” he explained.
“You know, my ‘why’ has always been to just love people the best that I can,” he continued. “I think it’s a journey and a process of growing with the Lord and learning love and trust.”
Ellis has first-hand experience with trusting God. After his young son died, God redeemed his relationships and used songwriting to pull him through the dark time.
“Songwriting also became a healing process for Ellis. In 2019, he and his wife Cassie endured the loss of their one-and-a-half-year-old son Asa from deteriorating health conditions since birth,” his website explains. “Racked with anger and hopelessness, Ellis looked to God for solace; he was given his loved ones in return. He built a relationship with his father who had not been in his life until Ellis was 20 years old, while also forging deeper bonds with friends he’d known since early adulthood and who consoled his family through their tragedy.”
“In losing Asa, Ellis discovered that God’s purpose isn’t to pull people out of their depression or loneliness but to deliver the love and care they need when it’s asked for,” it concluded.
Most recently, Ellis released a song titled “Without Jesus.” He shared a music video for the song on Instagram.
The lyrics read, “I don’t have all the answers, but I know who holds them all. Don’t have all the directions, but I never walk alone. God only knows how to work this out. No matter the road, wherever I go, I’ll never be without. I’ve got something to believe in, faith that’s more than a feeling. I could have gone another way and now I see it. Where would I be without Jesus?”
Movieguide® previously reported on Ellis:
Christian singer-songwriter Ryan Ellis is sharing his faith journey and how God called him to music.
“I had a single mom, a younger brother, and I knew nobody was coming to save me. It was just me,” he said in a video for YouVersion. “I just started being a street kid. I had no identity…there was no purpose. It felt really empty. I felt like I was just a shell of a man, and I remember just feeling, like, ‘Where’s the joy?’”
After Ellis joined the Navy, his mother started sending him “text messages from [a] Bible app.”
“I was like, ‘You know, maybe this is what I need…it’s making me feel like it’s answering a lot of questions, and it’s making me feel like I’m becoming a better person,’” he explained. “It made all the sense in the world to me after I got saved.”
After he found faith, Ellis soon felt called to start “singing to God.”
