How Comedian Leanne Morgan Uses Humor to Help Others See God

Clean comedian Leanne Morgan explained how God raised her up to be a comedian so that she could use her platform to reach non-believers.

Though Morgan grew up in a Christian home, it wasn’t until she was in her late thirties that she really committed herself to Christ. Afterward, however, she began to focus on the Lord rather than the things of this world.

“I was raised in church; I was raised in a tiny little country Methodist church that was precious…but we didn’t know the Bible. It was sweet, it was about love and forgiveness, but I didn’t know the Bible. I was probably 38 years old at Max Lucado’s church in San Antonio, Texas, where I really and truly even thought God was always with me…” Morgan told the “That Sounds Fun” podcast. “I was forgiven, I was white as snow, and that was where I finally got it, and I feel like there was a before and after since then.”

One of the first lessons that sunk into Morgan’s life was placing her identity in Christ rather than in the fleeting things of this world.

“If you put your everything into your looks, money — you know, money can be taken from you in a heartbeat… your beauty fades — if you put all your worth into all these worldly things it means nothing,” she said. “All that is fleeting.”

Once Morgan learned that lesson, she was able to begin her comedy career because she didn’t care what others thought of her, only what God thought of her. She also recognizes that it was through the grace of God that she was able to build her comedy career while living in the foothills of Appalachia.

For a long time, Morgan sold jewelry door-to-door, and it was while working that job that she realized she was able to connect with people and make them laugh.

“There were no comedy clubs around when I was a little mom in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and God made me a comedy club,” Morgan said. “Every night I was in front of my demographic talking about all the things I thought was funny, they thought was funny. I just look back on it and I do see that it was God’s plan.”

“…I was supposed to be talking about jewelry, and I would schlep this big jewelry case around. And I didn’t talk about jewelry. I talked about breast-feeding and hemorrhoids, and I developed a shtick, really, an act,” she told PBS previously.

Though Morgan is a believer, she does not focus on reaching a Christian audience. Instead, she keeps her comedy clean and accessible for anyone, and because she is a believer, her faith shines through her work.

“I’ve done churches and I thought, you know what, church people are already there,” she explained. “If I’m there and I drop a little seed like, in my Sunday school class we did so and so,’ or ‘My three little children go to a Christian school and this is what their teacher said,’ or whatever. I just thought, they need me more than church people already in church.”

The comedian recently released a book, titled What In The World?! It took the No. 2 spot on the New York Times Best Seller and Amazon lists.

“In her charming southern accent, Morgan brings readers inside her quest to find her voice after spending many years trying to figure out what that meant,” the synopsis reads. “Along the way, we learn how she grew up as a butcher’s daughter, landed a husband with health insurance, honed her stand-up technique selling jewelry at house parties, embraced the glories of aging, and surrendered to the comfort of wearing big flesh-toned panties.”
