How Matthew West Knew His Wife Was the One

Matthew West and his wife Emily are opening up about their sweet love story.
“I was working at Universal South Records in Nashville, and you came in to sing for the staff because…the record label was thinking of signing you to record deal,” Emily recalled on a special Valentine’s episode of her husband’s podcast. “I went down to hear you, along with everyone else, and you sang, what? Three songs? Five songs?”
“Did you see something in me in that moment? Like, did you like me?” West asked.
“I thought you were so cute, and you were funny and talented,” Emily responded. “So I went over to you after you sang…and just told you what a great job you did, and you blew me off.”
West explained that although he was interested in Emily, he was very embarrassed by his sweaty hands, so he was standoffish toward anyone in that moment.
Emily admitted that she was the one to pursue West, frequently inviting him to activities outside of work.
“I thought your job was to be nice to the artists, like a recruiter…but then you started inviting me to go to church with you,” he said.
West explained that when he was hospitalized for some health issues, their relationship grew strong quickly, and they got engaged just three months after they started dating.
“Our friendship really blossomed,” West previously told Christianity Today. “We skipped past all the trying to impress each other — she saw me at my worst. I’d had all these complications and at first the surgeons thought I might never play guitar again. My life was completely up in the air. But Emily never left my side. I knew then that I wanted to marry her.”

Emily explained that she knew West was “the one” very early on.
“I just remember thinking very early on, like on a few of our first dates, that I felt, you know, very safe with you, very already in love with you very early, and very, like, comfortable with you in a way that I hadn’t felt before. I just was like ‘this is it for me,’” she explained.
West and Emily married in 2003. Today, the couple shares two daughters, Lulu and Delaney. The Wests’ priority as parents? Making sure their daughters know Jesus and how much their parents love them.
“I want my daughters to say they knew their mom and dad were lifting them up and praying for them constantly,” the singer told TBN.
