How Parents’ Media Habits Influence Their Kids

A new study revealed that parents who regularly consume mature content raise kids who are more likely to choose R-rated movies and video games at younger ages.

The study found that children who grow up around mature content are 11% more likely to seek out R-rated shows, movies and video games when choosing content on their own. The study also revealed that where content is being consumed heavily influences the type of content chosen. Allowing screens in the bedroom resulted in a 44% rise in R-rated content while allowing screens at meals was associated with a 19% in R-rated movies and 26% increase in mature video games.

“Bedroom screen use emerged as the strongest predictor of mature media consumption,” said Dr. Jason M. Nagata, the lead author on the study. “When children have unrestricted access to screens, particularly in the privacy of their bedrooms, it opens the door to unchecked exposure to age-inappropriate content.”

On an encouraging note, the study also revealed that children whose media consumption was regularly monitored by parents were more less likely to choose mature content than their peers.

This study reinforces the data revealed by previous research which has found that parents are the biggest models for their kids’ screen time. Previous studies have revealed that parents who spend a lot of time on screens encourage their kids to do the same, while other researchers have compared parental screen time to second hand smoke in its effect on kids who may not be on screens themselves.

While the mental toll of screen time may be more impactful on younger brains, nobody benefits from high screen time. To help encourage healthy habits within your home, experts suggest parents take it upon themselves to limit their screen time and set a good example for their kids. In doing so, they can replace time on screens with quality family time, strengthening family bonds while steering clear of an addictive habit.
