How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Book Gets Sequel 60 Years After Original
By Movieguide® Contributor
Classic children’s book How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is set to get a sequel in September 2023, more than 60 years after the original was published.
“One of the most asked questions we receive from Seuss fans of all ages is, ‘What do you think happened to the Grinch after he stole Christmas?’” Alice Jonaitis, executive editor at Random House Children’s Books, said in a statement.
This classic Christmas story has sparked several movie adaptations. The most recent adaptation, THE GRINCH (2018), won the 2019 Movieguide® Award for Best Movie for Families.
A portion of the review reads:
THE GRINCH is a precious, delightful, superbly made movie. The colorful animation shows incredible imagination. The humor is delightful. The love is heartwarming. It’s well-designed, well-written and well-organized. The movie’s message is that Christmas can triumph over the meanest, most alienated heart. It features loving parents and children, a joyous community of inspired Whos, and a terrific character arc for the Grinch. Plus, it has great Christmas carols focusing on Jesus Christ and His redemptive love. MOVIEGUIDE® fell in love with THE GRINCH (2018). We think you will too.
While this new book may never be adapted to the big screen, its authors should look to THE GRINCH as an example of a successful story that appeals to families, promotes positive values and points to the true meaning of Christmas.
Set a year after the original, this new Christmas story will revisit beloved characters like the Grinch and Cindy Lou-Who.
“The new book will fill in the gaps as the Grinch tries to prove to Whoville that his heart really did grow three sizes bigger by building ‘the largest, most spectacular Christmas tree the Whos have ever seen,’” The Daily Caller reports.
The sequel comes from author Alastair Heim and illustrator Aristides Ruiz, who both have been involved in other Dr. Seuss projects in the past.
“All throughout writing the story, I couldn’t fully believe that I was actually getting to play in the amazing creative sandbox Dr. Seuss created all those decades ago,” Heim said.
“When I heard of the opportunity to be a part of this project, I jumped at the chance only to find that it was difficult and daunting to approach adding to or expanding such an esteemed and treasured part of the American Christmas canon,” Ruiz added.
