Is THE VIEW Avoiding Hiring Social Conservative Co-Hosts?

Is THE VIEW Avoiding Hiring Social Conservative Co-Hosts?

By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer

The popular ABC daytime show, THE VIEW, announced yesterday that Abby Huntsman will be the newest talk show host to join Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Meghan McCain. Huntsman is most well known for her presence on the show, FOX AND FRIENDS: THE WEEKEND with Pete Hegseth and Griff Jenkins. She announced via Twitter her plans to leave the program earlier this month.

Huntsman is no stranger to ABC. Prior to her FOX AND FRIENDS debut, she worked as a talent booker for ABC’s GOOD MORNING AMERICA. ABC said in a statement, “She brings her unique life and professional experiences and has a smart, relatable and distinctive point of view on everything from pop culture to politics to parenthood. We can’t wait to return to the Hot Topics table with Abby joining our panel of incredibly talented women whose diverse voices have always played a significant role in the national conversation.”

Hunstman grew up Mormon but transitioned out of the LDS community due to boding questions about salvation and homosexuality. After a Mormon bishop addressed her for dating someone, not of the Mormon background, who later became her husband as of eight years ago yesterday, Huntsman decided to cut ties. “I love people regardless of what their religion is, or what their background is or what their sex is,” she said about the confrontation.

Huntsman’s father, Jon Huntsman, a professed Mormon, is the U.S. Ambassador to Russia. He also ran for President in 2012. So, like, Meghan McCain, daughter of late Senator John McCain, Huntsman will bring some conservative bent to THE VIEW. However, like Megan McCain, there are many conservative beliefs that Huntsman opposes, like traditional marriage. Their presence on THE VIEW may add a little more balance on some viewpoints, but it’s far from a good representation of what most middle American families believe.

Professed Christian and actress Candance Cameron Bure told Fox News that she was optimistic THE VIEW would hire on a conservative voice. “I really hope that it is a conservative seat because I think it will balance out that table,” Bure said. Bure herself co-hosted THE VIEW from 2015-2016 and defended a myriad of conservative and Christian viewpoints with grace and poise, making her one of, if not the best hosts representing Christian values. But, this did not come without much criticism.

She noted in one episode the challenges of all the cross-talk. “I wasn’t afraid to share my opinion. I could get that part out there, but then when all the challenging kept going I was like, ‘I just wanna share my opinion then leave it there.’” Most viewers know that the media has a variety of liberal voices sharing their stances so having more voices on the opposing side gives a greater opportunity for people to make their own opinions about how to see the world.
