Jenna Bush Hager stays busy between hosting TODAY WITH JENNA & FRIENDS, podcasting, writing and parenting three kids, so this holiday season, she shares her tips on how to de-stress and make the most of it.

“We think of Thanksgiving as one day, but kids are out of school, family is coming — it’s this long weekend of time together,” she told Country Living. “So, slowing it down is something I’m really trying to do and be with my family. And it’s always the mom who is staying up, grabbing the silverware, and doing this and that. Sometimes my daughter Mila is like, ‘Mom, will you please just sit?’ but someone just asked for forks, for a napkin, someone just spilled something!”

She admitted how in the midst of the hustle and bustle, she is learning to relax and take them a moment at a time.

“I really am trying to slow down and focus on what we’re grateful for and who we’re with, as opposed to racing around,” she said. “I’m off from work, I don’t have to wake up at 4:50 a.m., I can actually enjoy time with my kids and stay up past 8:45 p.m. It’s something I’m really looking forward to.”

Bush Hager shared a little bit about her family’s Thanksgiving traditions.

“We usually host Thanksgiving with my husband’s side of the family,” she said. “We’re here at home, which I love. Sometimes we go to my cousins who live nearby, his family comes up, it’s a full house! Sometimes we buy our Christmas tree on Thanksgiving weekend, it’s super fun. We’ve never been to the parade, but we’re definitely curious — we do wake up and watch it. There’s a fire in the fireplace, we’re in our pajamas, there’s no rush, we’re lounging together.”

She also planned to make one of her signature dishes.

“Everyone usually brings something — I’ll make my signature pumpkin pie or truffle mashed potatoes— but really, it’s a team effort,” Bush Hager told PEOPLE. “We do our very best to make the most of our time together.”

But for Bush Hager, family time and managing stress well is a year-round practice, something she learned from her mother.

“She was saying was do not sweat the small stuff and it’s such classic yet great advice, but you have to practice it daily. It puts everything into perspective, and I try to emulate this in my daily life,” she told First for Women of her mom.

As the busyness of the holidays approach, let’s take remember to focus on the things that matter most — not the things that stress us out.
