HGTV’s Jenny Marrs reflected on her late mother-in-law’s “legacy [of] love” as she continues to mourn her death.
“I strongly believe in the practice of intentionally remembering God’s faithfulness in my life,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “It’s why I journal, take so many photos and why I wrote Trust God, Love People.”
Marrs shared that, following husband Dave’s mother’s dementia diagnosis, the family “decided to sit down and record a conversation.”
“We asked she and Dave’s dad about their childhoods and how they met and laughed as she told stories from the early days of marriage and motherhood,” she wrote. “For two hours, we listened as they reminisced and shared their heart.”

Marrs continued, “We knew the video would be a treasure but we had no idea how healing it would be for all of us. One of the holiest, most special memories I hold of Donna’s final days earthside was the evening we all piled in her room and watched together as she spoke words of love over us all through the screen. The veil felt thin. On earth as it is in Heaven. Her legacy is love.”
Dave’s mother passed away last month. Marrs marked the moment in a heartfelt Instagram post, writing, “I hope I can live out my life in the steps of my beloved Mother-in-law, Donna. She taught me how to live and love well. She taught me how to be the kind of mother-in-law and the kind of grandmother who I can’t even begin to imagine this earth without. The world lost one of the brightest lights I’ve ever known and I hope to honor her legacy well.”
“Well done, Donna. Well done. You never wavered in your love or your faith. We don’t know how to move forward here without you but I promise we will try our best. We will hold tight to the hope set before us. We love you so so so so so so much. No words will ever be enough,” she concluded.
In another post, Marrs shared that “rain poured forth from the heavens” on the day of Donna’s funeral.
“I was reminded of the time Jesus wept for his friend. He didn’t tear up – He wept – a word implying body-trembling sobs,” she wrote. “Despite the knowledge that He was going to call Lazarus out of the tomb, He took the time to grieve in His humanity. I believe He did so to remind all of us, in our times of deep sorrow, that His compassionate arms hold us even as we weep.”
Marrs concluded, “We have been carried by love. Thank you for praying for our family. We are heartbroken but we are not without hope.”
Marrs and her family continue to grieve the loss of their beloved family member but can take comfort in the memories they’ve preserved of her.
