Kanye West “Walks on Water” During Sunday Service Gathering

By Cooper Dowd, Staff Writer

The award-winning rapper Kanye West is a controversial Christian figure and added to the controversy in his most recent Sunday service where he, his kids, and his choir walked on water.

West performed the stunt during the evening service, which was the second of two Sunday services. To recreate the Bible’s account of Jesus Christ and His disciple Peter walking on water, West positioned a platform just below a pond’s surface.

Kim Kardashian West, known for KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS, did not follow her husband out onto the pond but filmed the reenactment and performance from the shore. West followed his choir out into the center of the pond, with his 7-year-old daughter, North, and 4-year-old son, Saint, at his side, and the choir performed several songs, including West’s “Ultralight Beam.”

The 43-year-old music mogul and recent presidential candidate is known for his questionable reenactments and reimaginings of important biblical events and themes.

Movieguide® previously reported on West bringing a depiction of Jesus on stage during a performance:

During the Seattle show, West (in an effort to show one of the “awesome things” about Christianity) welcomed an actor wearing white robes and sandals, clearly portraying Jesus Christ, before performing his hit song, “Jesus Walks.”

The singer exclaimed, “White Jesus, is that you?!” followed by a four-letter word of irreverent surprise. “I’ve been waiting for you my whole life,” West said.

“I’ve been here all along,” “Jesus” said, adding, “I didn’t come here to make bad people feel good. I came here to make dead people alive.”

Then, “Jesus” tells West to tell the people about “the light” and about “the light in you.”

Finally, West, accompanied by a group of back-up dancers, proceeded to bow to the Jesus figure as He looked down at them from a mountaintop.

Despite West’s recent tweetstorm, which suggested he wanted to divorce his wife in 2018, Kardashian-West still supports her husband’s Sunday services.

West also publicly apologized for his comments toward his wife and deleted the original tweet.

“I would like to apologize to my wife Kim for going public with something that was a private matter. I did not cover her like she has covered me.to [sic] Kim I want to say I know I hurt you. Please forgive me. Thank you for always being there for me,” West wrote on Twitter.

After West’s depiction of walking on water, Joel Osteen, a prominent Houston-based pastor and inspirational speaker, preached to over 150 attendees. West and Osteen partnered earlier this year and a year before that for the promotion of West’s Jesus Is King album.

At that time, Movieguide® reported:

Tyler Perry, Kanye West and Mariah Carey will join Houston-based preacher Joel Osteen for an Easter Sunday event titled “Hope Is Alive.”

Due to government regulated meetings, “Hope Is Alive” will take place virtually. However, Osteen’s honored guests are using their creativity to present the resurrection message.

“I’m not so sure exactly what [Kanye West is] going to do, but he sent me a couple of pictures where it looks like they’re going to keep the social distancing,” Osteen said. “Kanye is one of a kind. He’ll figure out some way to do it.”

West and his Sunday Service choir performed at Osteen’s church in 2019 while promoting his album “Jesus Is King.”
