Kathie Lee Gifford appeared on the TODAY show to talk about her new book, Nero and Paul: How the Gospel of Grace Defeated the Ruler of Rome.

“[The] story is really about the the increasing evil of a man named Nero who was one of the Caesars. And none of them were good guys…And then the juxtaposed against the story of the Apostle Paul who started out a very bad guy too,” Gifford said.

“He murdered the believers, the followers of Jesus at the time…but he thought he was being righteous. Does that sound familiar? He thought he had a zeal for God…[but] had a lust for power,” she explained.

But then he met God on the road to Damascus and heard his voice.

“That happened to me too. I wasn’t on the road to Damascus, but I was sitting in a little theater in Annapolis, Maryland, and I knew that I was hearing literally the voice,” she recalled.

“And you know what he said to me? ‘Kathy, I love you, and if you follow me, if you trust me, I will make something beautiful out of your life.’ And it was the best decision I ever made in my life,” she said. “So I’m fascinated by these ancient epic stories.”

She hopes that the book gives people optimism in faith.

“The main thing is I want to give people hope,” she said.

“And you realize that even in the midst of just some of the most horrendous evil and soul searing stuff in this world, God is present. We may not see Him, but he’s there. And you will find Him if you seek Him,” she said.

Gifford’s book came out on March 10 and is available on Amazon.com.

Part of the description reads, “You’ll travel with Paul as he ventured from Jerusalem all the way to Spain, making friends, winning converts, and persisting through grueling opposition. You’ll see up close Nero’s kingdom of wealth, glamour, sex, and power—the proud trappings of a self-proclaimed god. In contrast, Paul boldly offered what the world desperately needed: the Messiah’s life-giving good news of God’s presence indwelling his people.”

Gifford shared on Instagram last month, “True power isn’t found in thrones or empires — it’s found in a life surrendered to God. NERO AND PAUL reveals the stark contrast between Nero’s selfish ambition and Paul’s unwavering faith, showing how the gospel of grace overcame the might of an empire.”

This is the second book in her Ancient Evil, Living Hope series, which juxtaposes an ancient believer against a suppressor. The first book in the series is Herod and Mary: The True Story of the Tyrant King and the Mother of the Risen Savior.
