Kathy Lee Gifford Says ‘It’s Time for a Show’ Like THE BAXTERS
By Movieguide® Contributor
Kathy Lee Gifford explained why she believes THE BAXTERS is coming to America at the perfect time.
“I think it’s time for a show like this,” Gifford told THE TODAY SHOW. “Have you noticed people are terrified again? Everybody is afraid. Everybody is, and with good reason too often, you know. There is a lot of hopelessness.”
Gifford’s daughter, Cassidy, who stars in the show, told Movieguide® that it counters that feeling, saying, “THE BAXTERS gives hope, and I do think that there is an audience for it.”
The show, based on the series by Karen Kingsbury, follows the Baxter family as they navigate life and cling to their faith during the highs and lows. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
THE BAXTERS is an entertaining series about a loving family going through multiple issues. The program is very well produced. Each episode presents a new issue and a way to biblically work through it. Viewers will be interested and entertained by each storyline and how they develop. The first eight episodes of THE BAXTERS have a strong Christian, moral worldview with prayer, Scripture and examples of faith. However, the episodes deal with serious issues, so it’s designed for mature viewers. For example, THE BAXTERS talks about an illicit affair but shows a positive example of a Christian fighting for her marriage.
Gifford believes the world needs more shows like THE BAXTERS as people have become afraid to express their God-given uniqueness.
“That’s the other part, too, that’s missing in the world today. Everybody can put a filter on you, and I think God went to an awful lot of trouble to make us completely unique—if he did that with the snowflakes, you know,” Gifford said. “And then we try to cookie-cutter what everyone is saying. If you’re going to live a life, live an authentic one.”
Despite authenticity adding color and joy to life, most people aren’t able to fully express themselves because of how the world is today. Because of this, Gifford believes she wouldn’t be as successful if she was starting her career today.
“When I was with [co-host] Regis [Philbin], we talked for 23 minutes straight without a note,” she said. “No writers, no anything. Back then, you weren’t editing yourself all the time. That’s the trouble with today, too with humor, you know. When you have to think about what you are going to say, the fun goes out.”

Kathy Lee Gifford, her daughter Cassidy and Roma Downey recently spoke with Movieguide® about why people need Amazon Prime’s new show, THE BAXTERS.
“I really wanted to be involved because…there’s nothing like it out there right now, and people really are so hungry for it, and they want to find hope in something because there’s so much negative out there,” Cassidy began. “You know, you’re inundated with it, I feel like, from all angles the second you turn your TV on, whether it be the news or even all the scripted series that are out there. People want to feel hope, and they want to feel connected to something, and I think more people out there have faith than we than we actually think.”
THE BAXTERS is “An ensemble family drama based on the bestselling novels from Karen Kingsbury, that follows Elizabeth and John Baxter, and their adult children, as they navigate life’s highs and lows, both with and without God.”
