While THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE was modestly received by audiences when it first released – grossing less than $100 million at the domestic box office – it has become a favorite of millions due to its incredibly memorable characters and plotlines. Furthermore, the story is very family friendly and is accessible for all audiences, causing it to be recognized at the 2001 Movieguide® Award Gala as one of the most family friendly movies of the year. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
Director Mark Dindal and Producer Randy Fullmer have assembled a talented cast and crew to create a wacky ride through a colorful cartoon world. Their team imbues the characters with a brilliant array of entertaining character traits. They make the story come alive with energy, humor and adventure, marred only by mild cartoon violence, children dreaming of their father in danger and very mild sexual innuendo. Best of all, THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROVE teaches valuable moral lessons in an entertaining fashion. Included with these lessons are some redemptive elements of forgiveness, repentance and unconditional love.
Warburton’s focus on an uplifting story through the EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE has played out many times through his career and was relevant in his own parenting story as well as he has focused on being a good father. Warburton and his wife Cathy Jennings have four adult children and were able to connect with them in 2020 when they chose to watch old movies together during quarantine.
“[It] brought them back to specific moments and helped them grow as a unit. It’s so fun to be in the early stages [of childhood]. It really is but they grow up so fast because I have four adult kids and it sounds so cliché, but you don’t know where the time goes,” Warburton told Fox News. “I mean, I have a 27-year-old son, a 26-year-old daughter, a 22-year-old son and a 19-year-old son. And it’s just gone. You know, we just started watching home movies the other day. And the kids are – they’re loving them and I’m so glad we got them.”
As Warburton leaves a legacy of family-friendly movies, it is fun to see how he has poured into his own kids and also has such a strong relationship with his sons – who have also inherited his iconic voice.
