The LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy is killing it in the box office once again.

Showtimes for FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS are set for Jan. 16, THE TWO TOWERS for Jan. 17 and THE RETURN OF THE KING for Jan. 18. The movies have generated $5 million in domestic pre-sales, with approximately 407,000 tickets sold so far.

“The LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy re-release is off to record start for the franchise at Fathom. We could not be more pleased that the large LORD OF THE RINGS fanbase will have the benefit of hearing in-depth and exclusively in theatre from Peter Jackson himself prior to each of these three remarkable films,” said Ray Nutt, CEO at Fathom Entertainment.

“The extended editions of the trilogy of THE LORD OF THE RINGS movies are sure to be a landmark event for fans and a high point for classic film re-releases in 2026,” he added.

The release lines up with the 25th anniversary of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING.

The company re-released the trilogy back in 2024, which only sold 246,000 pre-sale tickets. It made $8.2 million in total. If the re-releases continue on their current course, Screen Rant estimates they’ll bring in $13.6 million, which would be more than all the current domestic grosses of all four of 2026’s new wide releases.

Fathom Entertainment has added more dates and locations this year to match the demand, Variety reported Jan. 14.

The re-releases have already outgrossed recent releases WE BURY THE DEAD and I WAS A STRANGER.

Director Peter Jackson has included “exclusive, lengthy welcome fan introductions” for each of the editions this year, which makes the extended additions about 11.5 hours long altogether.

The franchise has grossed about $3 billion worldwide to date and won 17 Academy Awards. THE HOBBIT trilogy also grossed $3 billion across the globe.

Part of Movieguide®’s review of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING reads, “Part One of THE LORD OF THE RINGS is a wonderful ‘epic’ fantasy about good and evil with top-notch actors, storyline and special effects. The movie is clean, but there is plenty of sword-fighting violence that is, at times, a bit too strong for children.”

“The movie also includes a brief occult element not in the book. Happily, however, the filmmakers have left in plenty of Christian author J. R. R. Tolkien’s biblical, allegorical references. Take your older children if they are mature enough to handle mystical creatures, scary monsters and sword fighting.”

Fans interested in the re-releases can visit Fathom Entertainment’s website to find theaters near them.
