Mario Lopez Apologizes for Comments About Children Choosing Their Gender

By Tess Farrand, Associate Content Editor

Christian actor and TV host Mario Lopez said in a recent interview that he thinks children shouldn’t be allowed to choose their gender. After his comments went live to the public in late July, Lopez apologized.

Some outlets report he could even lose his next job over the comments.

“The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were,” Lopez said in an official statement to the tabloid Us.

“I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful.”

Lopez hosts EXTRA, but is scheduled to join ACCESS HOLLYWOOD on NBC.

“While we have enjoyed a long relationship with Mario Lopez, who we know to be a caring person, the opinions he expressed in this interview do not reflect those of EXTRA,” according to a statement. “We wholeheartedly embrace our friends from the LGBTQ community and believe they need support and love.”

According to Faithwire, NBC may consider removing Lopez from his future role over his comments:

There’s a chance, though, that statement — as penitent as it is — might not be enough for those in power at NBC. An unnamed source at the network told Radar Online that executives “held an emergency meeting” to discuss the Christian celebrity’s future with the show “because they do not see how they can just let this fly.”

“His apology really meant nothing at all,” the source reportedly said. “All it does is solidify that he was aware that his comments were transphobic and hurtful.”

Another source, however, has insisted Lopez’s job with NBC is not in jeopardy and said production will begin in the fall as scheduled.

Lopez first took his stance on the program the CANDACE OWENS SHOW.

On the program, Lopez and Owens discussed the ever-present cultural conversation of transgenderism and transitioning, which is seeping into children’s lives.

Lopez said the following, according to the Daily Wire, which caused many heads to turn in disapproval.

“If you’re three years old, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make this determination then,” Lopez said on the show. “It’s sort of alarming, and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later.”

Lopez himself is the proud father of three children, who he frequently posts about on social media.
