Mark Harmon says fans will be “surprised” by his upcoming appearance in the upcoming NCIS and NCIS: ORIGINS crossover.

“My first reaction to it was ‘How are they going to do it?’” Harmon, who played Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS for 19 seasons, told CBS. “But they have an idea that I thought made a lot of sense, and I’m here to support the show the best way I can, and part of that is being asked to do something as an actor that I find both pertinent to the storytelling and also believable.”

Harmon said he was “glad to be part of it, and I hope people like it,” adding, “I think [fans] are going to find out [what Gibbs has been up to]. I think they’re going to be surprised a little bit, too.”

“I’m just here to support, and that has to do also with supporting this cast and this show and this network, and kind of being proud of something you put your name on,” the actor concluded.

Gibbs spoke about the crossover more in an interview with TV Insider, saying showrunners  David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal are “really talented” and he “trust[s] them.”

“This is a process, and it’s been pretty interesting to watch this develop and also have a memory of what it was like 20 years ago when the mothership was started,” Harmon shared. “So for me, other than doing the voiceover [in NCIS: ORIGINS], I just trust these two showrunners and what their ideas are. That’s my job to support that. And this is part of their thought of what is right for the show. So that’s why I’m part of it.”

So, does this appearance mean Harmon’s version of Gibbs might be coming back again for future episodes?

“I don’t know,” Harmon teased. “[For this crossover] they had an idea and I liked the idea. I try really hard to think about what’s best for the show or what possibly can work for this show. But part of that also is giving them the ability to write what they feel is right for the reasons they feel it’s right….this is on a similar path, which is not a bad idea if it works. So we’ll see.”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, North recalled asking Harmon to return, saying, “In the end, Gina and I just went to him and said how important we think this episode is, how cool it is, how different it is that the network’s never done anything like it, doing a crossover using time. And Mark said, ‘Okay, let’s roll.’”

“And the fact that he said yes and wanted to do that, it was just so meaningful and special,” Monreal added. “Having worked with him on the mothership, and then to have him come up here and say David’s words. It just meant the world.”
