Pop Star So Grateful for Her Life Today: ‘I Always Wanted a Family’

Pop star Meghan Trainor always wanted to be a wife and a mom, and now she’s living her dream.

“Wheream right now is far beyond anythingcould have ever dreamed of. I always wanted a family. I always wanted a husband and kids. Nowneed some daughters,” Trainor told PEOPLE. She shares sons Riley, 3, and Barry, 18 months, with husband Daryl Sabara.

Motherhood hasn’t always been easy, though, and she hopes her relatable mom moments remind others that they’re not alone.

Shortly after delivering her second son Barry, the singer had a “panic attack” during a period when “he would just not stop crying.”

“…I was just over-exhausted, but I felt like I was dying. I felt if I stood up, I would pass out. I didn’t feel safe holding the baby and at the same time I felt like my body was giving up on me,” she told TODAY

“I said to my husband, ‘Daryl, I need help,'” Trainor continued. “And he said, ‘Yeah, I’m here, no worries.’ And I said, ‘No, no, no, something’s wrong. I need you to take the baby and I need to make some calls. I need to call my mom. I need to call a doctor. I need help.'”

She got the help she needed, but she also knows “a lot of other moms don’t have that support, or don’t feel like they do, so I can’t imagine how that night turns out for them. It’s frightening and sad.”

“That’s why I want to share my own experience — to show other moms that they’re not alone, and also to encourage them to ask for help and seek support. That means being honest about my own support system,” Trainor added.

While family life was always part of her dream, being a pop star came as a surprise.

“But I never thought I could be a pop star. I always dreamed of it; it was my biggest dream, and I was like, I didn’t believe in myself. I was like,There’s no way.’ So, to be here and to say like, yeah, I toured,’ is beyond everything I could have ever dreamed of,” the mother of two added.

Trainor skyrocketed to fame in 2014 with the release of “All About That Bass,” saying she “had no idea it was going to be as big as it is.”

Trainor said, “I remember my parents too being like, ‘They want to sign you for the Bass song.’ I was like, ‘Yeah.’ And they’re like, ‘But you have all these other songs too.'”

She was “terrified” when it came time to do the music video.

“I was terrified. I had no management. I didn’t know what I was doing. I’ve never done a music video. I never put makeup on my eyebrows. I was so scared,” Trainor recalled.

Despite naysayers, motherhood has only helped her career.

“When I became a mom, my career had a whole new life,” Trainor said. “I had a whole reboot, and it’s because my kids made me want to be the best version of me. I’m not peaking. I’ve just begun.”
