Mel Gibson Explains Why Christ’s Resurrection Is ‘Verifiable History’
By Movieguide® Contributor
While a guest on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Mel Gibson explained the reason for his Christian faith and why he believes that Christ rose from the dead.
During his appearance on the podcast, the question of religion came up, and Gibson explained that the boldness of the disciples convinces him that Christ resurrected three days after hanging on the cross.
“Every single one of those guys died rather than deny their belief,” Gibson said, per Faithwire. Because of this, he holds the Bible, and especially the Gospel accounts, to be “verifiable history.”
Because of this, Gibson put his career on the line and created the PASSION OF THE CHRIST immediately after reaching the pinnacle of his success through BRAVEHEART. Unfortunately, as he pointed out, Christianity is the one religion not welcome in Hollywood.

“Christianity is the one religion that you’re allowed to disparage,” Gibson said, describing Hollywood as “progressive [and] open-minded” but views Christianity as “negative.”
Nonetheless, THE PASSION went on to gross $370.8 million at the domestic box office, making it the most successful R-rated movie of all time when it released — a record that was only broken last year by DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE. Gibson’s goal with the movie was to highlight just how brutal Christ’s death was and to underscore the enormity of his sacrifice, something the movie certainly does.
“I wanted to illustrate the extent of the sacrifice Christ made, so I felt it was right to do a film like that,” Gibson told Greg Laurie last October. “With my own experience contemplating over the years on The Passion, my imagination soared. And there are readings on the matter that kind of really brought home the dreadful reality of how bad it was. I just wanted to put that back on film to give people maybe a new look and to sort of bring another theological perspective to it that perhaps I hadn’t thought of before now.”
Now Gibson wants to return to the world of faith with a sequel to THE PASSION that captures the resurrection.
